Activities for kids during a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE! Sure, a Zombie Apocalypse may be far-fetched. But, I am sure you could think of another similar situation. One, in which you may need to keep the kids entertained for long periods, say for, for example, during the coronavirus shutdown. There are copious amounts of things to do. Genealogy is for all ages, from Grade school to Teenagers, to Retirees. It is both entertaining and educational. Here are a few that you can do WITH your kids.During this time of “Social Distancing,” there is no better way to get a child to connect with their […]

More Ramblings of a Grumpy Old Man
Wouldn’t it be nice to be immortal? If you have seen the movie Highlander, you know there can be only one. Well, maybe not. I was an Instructor at an Advanced Individual Training (AIT) School. A school for Veterinarian Assistants, better know as VET TECHS. We taught our soldiers procedures similar to that of the Medical Techs. Our students had to learn each procedure on multiple animals, Rats, Cats, Dogs, and Horses. We also counseled them on their career in the military. One may never know the impact on has on another person. My Immortality came when I least expected […]
A Grumpy Old Man at it Again
I once wrote that one should take time to talk to their relatives, and then sit down and interview them, especially from the generations past. But what if you are the “Generation Past”? No need to wait. No time to waste. I am 70 yrs old. Granted my plan is to live to 100. But what if God, Fate, or Events have a different plan? One’s life experiences, if not passed on, are forgotten, lost forever. The secret to immortality is to pass on the events of one’s life so they live on in the memories of generations to come. […]
Grumpy Old Man is at it again.
Hey, it is me again. Online research is excellent. One can sit at home and search the world. But can they? Online I found out that my Dad was married before he met my mother. I found documents that confirmed he was married to another woman. I could not find where my Dad married my mother, UGH. I know he did. I have two brothers and memories that say he did. I just can’t prove it online. Where do I go from here? I keep saying interviewing relatives is the basis of your research. I reached out to my cousin. […]
Swimming with Sharks
I have a big fish story. But, what does swimming with sharks have to do with genealogy? Everything! Genealogy is tracing one’s line of descent. But memories add spice to merely a name and birth date. I was in the Army, stationed on an island in the South Pacific. The island was only 2 miles long, ½ a mile wide and 7 ft above sea level. The island was man-made. Made of Coral dredgings, you could look out your room and imagine it was snow. Shorts, Flip Flops, and a Polo Shirt was “Off Duty” Formalwear. The trade winds blew […]

Rambling thoughts from an Old Man!
When I was young, I, like most kids, and even some young adults never really thought about the future or what I would leave behind. A major fault as I look back on my life. I have many memories but few pictures, keepsakes, or a journal of my past. It seemed like too big a bother at the time to take the time. I have had many adventures in my 70 years. I still remember them, but the details and participants have faded with the years. I look back and ask myself, who was that guy or what was that […]
Adventures in Genealogy
By Pat Smart How was I to know how a simple Father’s Day Gift from my Ex-wife, a DNA kit from Ancestry would affect my life? I thought this would be “neat”. I can find out if the stories I heard as a kid were true or not. So, I sent in my kit and waited, and waited, and waited. Ok, fine. How was I to know all I had to do was sign on to the website? When I didi sign on, I found that the stories I heard as a kid were genuine and not so true, but […]
